Repairing Rotted Soffit & Fascia

When it comes to your home’s soffit and fascia, even the sturdiest installation job will eventually fall victim to wear and tear. Things such as inclement weather, moisture, insect infestation, poor installation, and other factors can cause soffit and fascia to rot and force the need for replacement. However, for those who want to try repairing soffit and fascia on their own or get a better idea of the repair process, we’ve collected some steps for you to follow below.

• Step 1: Renting a rolling scaffold for your soffit and fascia replacement project is essential to make it easier to reach the necessary areas of your roof. You’ll need to adjust the scaffolding to the slope of your yard.

 

• Step 2: Use a crowbar or prying hammer to remove the nails from the gutter to release the gutter straps and remove it from your roof.

 

• Step 3: Pry any fascia board off the rafter tails of your home if showing noticeable signs of rot. Beware of rusty nails; you may need to cut through them to remove more stubborn fascia board.

 

• Step 4: Pry the soffit boards off the bottom of your roof deck’s overhanging area and remove the trim strip installed there. You may want to wear a face mask to prevent breathing in airborne debris.

 

• Step 5: Inspect the amount of rot and let moist areas dry out before proceeding with repairs.

 

• Step 6: Install a new section of the rafter to your roof deck’s old one to reinforce its old rafter tail. When doing so, be sure that it’s twice as long as your old rafter tail.

 

• Step 7: Install new rafter tails to replace the old ones or install new 2x4s on top of your old rafter tails if they haven’t rotted completely, then install your new fascia board.

 

• Step 8: Installing a ventilation component along with your new soffit board will help your attic breath better and prevent rot and moisture buildup.

 

• Step 9: Finish installing your new soffit board, then paint it and voila!
