With many homeowners looking to upgrade their home, we're happy to say that plaster is making somewhat of a resurgence when it comes to walls and interior finishing's. We can't say our team at Do-All Stucco & Stone is very surprised, after all, plaster provides interiors with an extra shine and depth when light hits it and it can really add a great pop to your home. And unlike paint, it is free of any harsh chemicals or volatile organic compounds (VOC). Another reason homeowners are beginning to take notice of plaster for their interiors is due to the fact that is it is durable and can last longer when compared to drywall. And while it can require more skill to install (that’s where we can help!) the outcome is always worth the wait.
Which Type of Plaster Should I Use? Since interior plastering has different requirements, before beginning any plater project in your home, be sure to do your homework and contact our Do-All Stucco & Stone team. The last thing you want to do is start a plastering project, only to have it done incorrectly. But not all plasters are created equal, and some may not be suitable for your needs. So, to help, here is a breakdown of some different types of plaster that can be used for interior walls and the benefits each can bring your project. Many homes from your grandparent’s generation utilized this type of plaster for their walls. For this type of plaster, you would begin with a mix of plaster that had aggregates that will shrinkage once it was applied. Next, you would add what is known as a brown coat which consists of sand and plaster. The last coat would contain limestone which does not have to be hand mixed. This plaster is available in a wide range of colors and can be used in both your kitchen and your bathroom (unlike clay plaster). To get an extra layer of protection for this type of wall finish you can apply a layer of Marseilles-style soap or bee’s wax. Venetian plaster is what it is called when pigment is put in with slaked lime plaster. This is not the same thing as the paint(s) which may have the same name. This new type of plaster offers a very easy way to get that plaster finish look on your walls. Since many have acrylic in them, they can dry fast and don’t need many coats. They can be applied like paint, which makes them a popular option for DIY or homeowners on a budget. This powder plaster is mixed with water and needs to be applied fast – roughly about 30 to 40 minutes before it is unusable. While it does need to be applied quicker when compared to other plasters, it is a very affordable plaster and can be colored rather easily. Gypsum plaster cannot be polished and since it doesn’t have as many layers as some other plasters it will not appear to have as much depth or subtle color choices/finishes. As the name would indicate, this type of plaster contains clay along with sand and dyes. This type of plaster is a popular choice for people who suffer from allergies or sensitive skin and reactions. While you can’t use this option in bathrooms, kitchens, and any other “wet” areas of a home, it can actually help control the humanity level since it can release and absorb moisture in the air. Before application, always sand and use primer on the surface you are working on before applying any of your clay plaster. Getting the consistency, you need may require a few tries at mixing your clay with water, but once you get it, you will want to apply roughly 5 layers for best results. Made from black soap (from olives) and lime plaster, this Moroccan finish is extremely durable. A great benefit of using this plaster is that is waterproof, so it is ideal for bath and kitchen walls, shower walls, and you can even use it for tubs and sinks too.
