How to Maintain Stucco

​Stucco is a mixture of aggregates, binders, and water. It is used as a decorative coating for walls and ceilings. Traditional stucco is applied in several layers to create a strong bond to the wall. It is rot-resistant, energy-efficient, and has sound-absorbing properties.
 
Like every other finishing material, stucco needs ongoing care and maintenance. Regular stucco maintenance addresses current problems and prevents potential issues. Ongoing stucco maintenance can save you money on stucco repair in Calgary and headaches down the road.
 
Follow these tips to keep your stucco in tip-top shape. 

Clean Your Stucco Regularly

​Stucco is a porous material. Like other porous materials, it can collect dirt and absorb stains. To prevent dirt buildup, clean your stucco two or three times a year. Start by spraying water on your stucco from top to bottom with a garden hose. This will loosen up dirt and stains. Scrub any remaining stains with a bristle brush. Once your stucco is dry, rinse the surface one last time.
 
For stubborn stains, use bleach solution, a mixture of dish soap and warm water or TSP solution. Take proper precautions when using TSP for stucco cleaning. Follow manufacturer instructions, wear safety gear and make sure the area is well ventilated.
 
You can also use a pressure washer to clean your stucco. When pressure washing your stucco, proceed with extreme caution.  Adjust the PSI between 1,500 and 2,800. Water released at a higher pressure can cause an injury or damage your siding.
 
To avoid injuries, stand at least 12-24 inches away from the wall. Do not scrub your stucco vigorously. Make sure no soapy water is left on your siding or it can attract more dust and dirt.

​Repair any Cracks in Your Stucco as Soon as Possible 

​Like other finishing materials, stucco can crack over time. Unaddressed cracks undermine the structural integrity of stucco. Mold can grow inside cracks in your stucco.
 
As a part of stucco maintenance, visually inspect your stucco regularly. Repair any cracks before they widen and lead to serious problems. Be sure to check your stucco after a storm or any other natural disaster.
 
Use elastomeric coating to fill in stucco cracks. When applied correctly, elastomeric paint protects stucco from wind-driven rain and prevents further cracking. The sooner you repair cracks, holes, and chips in your stucco, the better.

​Seal Your Stucco

Have your masonry contractor in Leduc seal your stucco after installing it. Stucco sealing is a time-tested way to protect stucco from moisture. Use a clear masonry sealer designed to prevent water from penetrating stucco pores. Reseal your stucco every five years.
